New to UT? - Join a Koinonia WAG!

The first few weeks on a college campus can be a disorienting time with the dizzying array of events and activities being offered. It's hard to decide which activity to check out first and find people to check it out with. Joining a WAG might be a good place to start and you may just end up making a new group of friends or have a great time with your high school buddies to make your first week at UT a memorable one! Find out more... »

What is a Welcome Activity Group (WAG)?

A WAG is a group of students new to UT, interested in checking out Koinonia’s Welcome Week activities together – culminating in attending our annual New Student Welcome Night with a FREE BBQ!

There are so many activities being offered on campus! What activity should I check out first and what if it is a dud?

You can start with Koinonia’s welcome week activities! Our activities have been known over the years for offering good, wholesome fun with warm and friendly people. This year we will be offering the following events:

Ultimate Freezbee, Shaved Ice and Sports, Board games and Bubble Tea – and of course, our premier fall kickoff event, NSWN (with free BBQ)! People have told us they have really enjoyed our events in the past. Hopefully you, too, will enjoy your time spent with us!

How do I know where to go?

No problem! These groups will be led by one of our experienced staff and upperclassmen to ease your transition to UT by leading you to each of our welcome week events. Once you sign up, you will be contacted by one of our friendly group leaders who will tell you about the first event as well as be available throughout the week to help make your first week an enjoyable one.

What will I be doing in the WAG?

Sky’s the limit! You will travel as a group and depending on your group leader decide which Koinonia Welcome Week activity to go to. Maybe one, maybe all! At these events you will have a chance to meet and get to know other WAGs as well as be introduced to our fellowship. In between the welcome week events, maybe your WAG leader might suggest eating together at the notable eateries in Austin, or going on a Target or Office Max run to get any last minute school supplies, or just decide to hang out together in your dorm lounge. Whatever it is that your WAG will end up doing, the point will be to share the experiences of welcome week together and maybe have something memorable to talk about at the end of week!

Who will I be grouped with and how big will it be?

You can choose either to group yourselves with your friends, or if you’d like to get to meet some new folks, you can be grouped with those from the same hometown or major. The number in each WAG will be vary depending on the make-up but generally will be between 8-15 people. Of course if you just want to come and check out any of our events without being a part of a WAG, you are welcome to just come at anytime!

Do I need to be religious to join a WAG?

Nope! We welcome you if you have never been to church, or have gone only occasionally or have been to church all your life. We especially want to welcome you if you are interested in finding out more about Christianity, as we know college is a great time to cultivate your intellectual curiosity and to think about life from God’s perspective.

Please let us know any other questions you might have about WAG or our group! Email us at: info@koinoniatexas.org

Looking forward to meeting you and we hope that your first few weeks at UT will be a fun, and exciting one! Good luck and see you during welcome week!

For this week’s section, we will take a look at how the spheres of the state, politics, and law are interconnected and how they relate to other aspects of the social realm: family, church, labor, community, and the relationship between God and man. Special attention will be given to the design, structure, and role of the state, its place in God’s plan for human society, and the rightful extent and limits of its power. The state, as we will see, has the capacity to exert a tremendous power for good in the affairs of mankind as long as it operates within its proper boundaries; but it also has the potential to become the most horrendously pathological and abusive of all the social spheres if not kept in check.
